Biotechnological approaches to develop nitrogen-fixing cereals: A review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Agricultural yields are often limited by nitrogen (N) availability, especially in countries of the developing world, whereas industrialized nations application chemical N fertilizers has reached unsustainable levels that have resulted severe environmental consequences. Finding alternatives to inorganic is critical for sustainable and secure food production. Although gaseous (N2) abundant atmosphere, it cannot be assimilated most living organisms. Only a selected group microorganisms termed diazotrophs, evolved ability reduce N2 generate NH3 process known as biological fixation (BNF) catalysed nitrogenase, an oxygen-sensitive enzyme complex. This presents opportunity improve nutrition crop plants, through introduction into cereal crops either fixing bacteria or nitrogenase responsible fixation. review explores three potential approaches obtain N-fixing cereals: (a) engineering function plant cells; (b) legume symbiosis cereals; (c) cereals with capability associate bacteria.

A Review on Taxol Production through Biotechnological Approaches

Taxol is a very important anticancer drug which was first isolated from Yew plant (Taxus spp.). However, Taxol supply by extraction from natural sources, has several limitations, and cannot meet current market's demands. Therefore, it seems necessary to use alternative production methods. Producing Taxol through biotechnological approaches is among the main options which have some advantages su...

Synthetic biology approaches to engineering the nitrogen symbiosis in cereals.

Nitrogen is abundant in the earth's atmosphere but, unlike carbon, cannot be directly assimilated by plants. The limitation this places on plant productivity has been circumvented in contemporary agriculture through the production and application of chemical fertilizers. The chemical reduction of nitrogen for this purpose consumes large amounts of energy and the reactive nitrogen released into ...

Nitrogen Fixing

Blue Green Algae (BGA) have the capacity to self generate photosynthates from CO and 2 water. It is gratifying to note that Aulosira is the most important alga of the rice fields of India. Algalization has been found to benefit all the growth parameters. The propagation of BGA enriches the N status of soil and also provides organic matter and biological quotient 2 substances for plant growth. T...

Biotechnological solutions to the nitrogen problem.

The availability of nitrogen is one of the major limiting factors to crop growth. In the developed world, farmers use unsustainable levels of inorganic fertilisers to promote crop production. In contrast, in the developing world inorganic fertilisers are often not available and small-holder farmers suffer the resultant poor yields. Finding alternatives to inorganic fertilisers is critical for s...

Response of cereals to cycocel application (Review article)

ABSTRACT- Growth retardants are natural or synthetic chemical substances which are directly applied to crops to alter some structural processes. It is expected that these alterations modify hormonal balance and growth leading to increased yield, improved crop quality or facilitated harvesting. Cycocel (CCC) or chlormequat chloride (2-chloro ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) as a synthetic grow...
